Home Saved from Foreclosure Gets a Face-lift from Youth Volunteers
Westminster, CO June 9, 2011 –Next week, 400 youth volunteers, ranging in age from 14-18, will descend upon the Denver Metro area to make a difference in the lives of those in need. In Westminster, campers with Catholic Heart Work Camp will work to beautify the home of Veronica Quintana.
The volunteers will be repairing cooling systems, painting walls, trimming hedges, cleaning out gutters, washing windows, fixing doors, scraping and painting the outside of Mrs. Quintara’s home.
Catholic Heart found Mrs. Quintara through collaboration with Community Resources and Housing Development Corporation (CRHDC), a local agency that works to improve the lives of low to moderate income individuals through Home Ownership Counseling, Home buyers assistance and affordable housing development. Last year, Mrs. Quintara was facing foreclosure and sought out counseling from CRHDC. This year, she feels more secure in her home and is happy to have help with the maintenance of its exterior, which she is unable to do herself.
It is a mutually beneficial arrangement, youth learn about giving and develop new skills, while elderly and disabled homeowners receive much needed assistance with the upkeep of their homes. “We are really happy to be a part of the great work that Catholic Heart is doing here in Westminster, and throughout the metro area,” says CRHDC Real Estate Specialist David Mayeranderson. “It is great to see individuals that we have counseled receive help and the energy from the youth is amazing - they will be putting in over a thousand hours of work.” Youth groups of 5-6 will be working at a total of 12 homes identified by CRHDC in Westminster.
This year, in addition to helping identify homes for the work camp, CRHDC also donated supplies to complete work on some of the homes, where needed repairs would not have otherwise been possible.
This is a new experience for the youth, many of whom have never picked up a hammer before coming to camp. “They learn a lot about community and about themselves” says Roger Gudenkauf, Volunteer Coordinator for Catholic Heart.
